When to Choose Bonding
Bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure in which a composite resin is shaped over a tooth and then polished to match the surrounding smile. There are a few situations in whit bonding may be a good cosmetic decision:
- Improve appearance of discolored teeth
- Fix the appearance of a chipped tooth
- Help a tooth look longer
- Close a gap between teeth
- Alternative to amalgam fillings
- Protect teeth when gums recede
- and more!
Minor Disadvantages to Dental Bonding
While dental bonding is an affordable option for many of the aforementioned cosmetic items, there are a few disadvantages to choosing dental bonding over something like porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns.Disadvantages of dental bonding may include:
- Bonding does wear down overtime; how quickly it wears down is dependent on personal habits such as;
- grinding teeth
- biting nails
- and eating hard foods.
- It can be stained just like natural tooth enamel can, things like tea, coffee, and cigarettes may discolor bonding.

Dental Bonding Procedure
Anesthesia is typically not required for the dental bonding procedure.
We first choose resin that will best match the color of your surrounding teeth. Then, the surface of your tooth is etched and cleaned to ensure a strong bond.
We can then apply the bonding which is of a putty consistency that is molded over the tooth to create the desired shape. After it is molded and shaped properly an ultraviolet light is used to harden the bonding.
Once the bonding has been hardened, we can do additional tweaks and smoothing of the tooth with a polish.
The entire bonding process takes approximately 30 minutes. And at the end of the process, you'll have a tooth that looks just like the others.
